On the 25th and 26th of November 2020, Cristina Oliveira and Margarida Trindade, from Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, presented “Who are the Professionals at the Interface of Science?” at the first EARMA-BESTPRAC joint conference, which was held online.
This was a great opportunity to present and discuss the concept of Professionals at the Interface of Science (PIoS), which was first introduced in the article, “The interface of science: the case for a broader definition of research management”. It framed the development of the foRMATion international curriculum, which will now be implemented at the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Corvinus University of Budapest and Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania.
Interface of Science represents a new umbrella definition for professionals that work to support and create added value to Research and Innovation (R&I), and it covers the full diversity of these figures. We propose that “PIoS are typically neither researchers nor administrative support personnel, but rather significant additional players that work at the interface of science, with specific professional skills that are essential upstream, during and down-stream the contemporary research endeavour, bringing specific value to the R&I ecosystem”.
This was an exciting presentation in an event that received 950 registrations from research managers and administrators all over Europe, with the goal of sharing best practices and reflecting on the current state of play this profession in Europe.
